Vernonia schools featured in Oregon Business Magazine

The statewide effort to replace Vernonia's K-12 schools is featured as an in-depth cover story in the October 2011 issue of Oregon Business (on newsstands now). The story chronicles the aftermath of the 2007 flood, the community’s vision to stake its future on the innovative school, and the Oregon-wide show of compassion and commitment that is helping to make this project a reality and a model for other rural communities.

Vernonia, Oregon is nestled in the beautiful Nehalem Valley deep in the coast range, just 45 minutes west of Portland. Vernonia is well-defined by the name of the town’s main thoroughfare….Bridge Street. For just as the street bridges the Nehalem River to Rock Creek, the town is also a bridge to both the past and the future. Vernonia combines the pleasures of small town living with the convenience of urban amenities and it offers a pleasant refuge from big city congestion.

Vernonia School District serves approximately 600 students , with a licensed teaching staff of 39 and a classified staff of 29. The district offers kindergarten through 12th grade, in two elementary schools; Washington and Mist Grade Schools, one Middle School; Vernonia Middle School and one high school; Vernonia High School. Each school takes an active role in providing educational programs designed to bolster students’ self-esteem and foster a positive school environment.
