Vernonia High School was built in 1953, and has endured two floods in the last fifteen years.  After the flood of 2007, the east wing of the school was demolished while the west side of the structure was refurbished and is still in use by athletics and band. The rest of the high school is housed in what was previously Vernonia Middle School and twelve modular classrooms situated behind Washington Grade School. Vernonia High School is a comprehensive high school offering a variety of required and elective courses.

PRINCIPAL'S GREETING

It seems unbelievable that another school year is already upon us. Hopefully this summer you have had the opportunity to enjoy some sunshine and a well deserved break from the school year routine.

Thank you for your continued support of your schools and our students. I enjoy and do not take for granted the opportunity I have to be your principal. My staff and I will continue to do whatever we can to provide the best education possible for all students. As you are all too aware, the declining state of the Oregon economy has forced virtually all school districts to explore ways to control spending and reduce operating budgets. Vernonia has not escaped the impact, as several staff members have retired, a few positions have been RIFed (Reduction in Force), and a few programs have been scaled back in an effort to control costs.

The impact these measures will have are still to be determined. More information will be made available as we near the start of the 2011-12 school year, but I wanted to keep you abreast of a few key issues that will affect you and your students: the master schedule and a 7 period day.

Master Schedule
As programs and staff are consolidated, there may be more Vernonia teachers that will be called upon to teach multiple grade levels. Determining factors that drive the schedule will be student enrollment, licensure of staff members, and changing graduation requirements.

7 Period Day
One could find research to support the effectiveness of both a regular 7 period day and our current rotating block schedule. Some educators like the longer class sessions afforded by the block, while others prefer to see each student every day for a shorter period of time. I personally have taught and found value in both, depending on the level of students and subject matter. The determining factor for us may simply be the fact that it will make scheduling much easier if all buildings are on the same schedule. Therefore, do anticipate at least a trial run of a switch to a traditional 7 period day.

Please be-proactive with your student’s education.  You are welcome to contact teachers, counseling, and/or administration if you need any assistance.  I encourage you to pay attention to the district and school calendars and get involved whenever you can.  Your child’s education depends on it!
